Which holiday celebration from a Spanish-speaking country would you like to attend and why?
tarea para el verano:
In order to retain your Spanish vocabulary and grammar, it's important that you spend time weekly practicing Spanish. Each week this summer, you are going to read one chapter of the novela "El primer trabajo de Roberto", which can be found in the tornado-shaped menu in your Voces etextbook by scrolling all the way to the very bottom of the menu after all of the chapters. There are a total of 9 chapters in the novela, and each one is less than one printed page long. After reading each chapter, complete and submit the comprehension questions that follow. This novela will provide you with a review of a variety of vocabulary themes and grammar that we learned this year. While you are reading, look for cognates and other vocabulary words you recognize as you are reading. Please do not look up each word you don't know. Instead, focus on the words you do know and use prior knowledge to get the gist of what is happening in each paragraph. Only look up words that inhibit your ability to understand a large chunk of the text. Please remember that there can be more than one correct way to phrase a sentence en español, so do not be discouraged if an answer is marked as incorrect. When looking over summer homework, Sr. Scalici and I examine effort and completion. Buena suerte. :)
In addition to reading the novela, there are a variety of other ways that are fun, yet beneficial to your Spanish retention and acquisition. Try these other ways to practice your Spanish skills over the summer:
- listen to music en español and see what words you recognize as you listen
- watch a TV show or movie from a Spanish-speaking country on Netflix or from another streaming service (turn on subtitles and remember that censorship is different from one country to the next, so pay careful attention to the posted advisories so you are watching something appropriate)
- rewatch a movie from your childhood on Netflix or another streaming service en español (turn on the Spanish subtitles to follow along with the dialogue)
- follow the news from international sources (El País, BBC Mundo, etc.) on social media to read about and watch videos of what is happening in the Spanish-speaking world en español
- download the free Duolingo app and earn points or compete against friends to practice Spanish vocabulary and grammar

cultura: Introducción a la República Dominicana
The Dominican Republic is located in el Caribe (the Caribbean) and shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. It was the first Spanish-speaking country I every traveled to, and is one of my very favorite places. The Dominican people are full of energy, smiles, and kindness. The country boasts many beautiful beaches and is home to many famous baseball players, including Sammy Sosa. To check see some of the people and places in the Dominican Republic, check out the Cap. 18 videos called "Overview of Dominican Republic" and "Las vistas y los sonidos de la República Dominicana".
vocabulario y gramática:
- Voces Capítulo 18: La República Dominicana - La semana pasada, aprendimos de las actividades en que participamos durante las vacaciones. Esta semana, vamos a continuar con más vocabulario de los viajes sobre el transporte y los hoteles. Mira y estudia el vocabulario "El viaje y el hotel" (be sure to scroll all the way down to see all of the vocabulary words). Selecciona el audífono (headphone) para escuchar la pronunciación. Puedes encontrar la lista de vocabulario y recursos adicionales aquí. En Voces, completa las actividades 1, 2 y 6 para practicar el vocabulario del viaje y del hotel.
- Los verbos regulares del pretérito - We are going to continuing working with the regular preterite tense verbs this week. Last week, you learned that there are two sets of verb endings for the preterite tense - one set for -ar verbs and another set that is shared by -er/-ir verbs. This week, we will continue to work with regular verbs that use these endings. Included in the regular preterite verbs are verbs that have spelling changes and stem-changes (these are not the same thing). There are two main types of spelling changers ("i" changes to "y" and -car/-gar/-zar). Verbs with the "i" to "y" spelling change are -er or -ir verbs only that have three vowels in a row in the él/ella/Ud. or ellos/ellas/Uds. forms. The -car/-gar/-zar spelling changes only occur in the "yo" forms of verbs with a -car, -gar or -zar ending in the infinitive form. For more specific information, check out the PowerPoint presentation and notes below (review slides 1-10 for the -ar, -er and -ir endings and use slides 11-20 of the PowerPoint to learn about spelling changes and stem changes, which corresponds with pages 3 and 4 of the notes). In Voces Cap. 18, you can also find a brief tutorial with examples on the "los verbos irregulares en el pretérito" page under the menu for the chapter (please note that these spelling changes and stem changes are NOT actually irregular verbs because they use the regular verb endings. Irregular verbs don't use standard endings.). En Voces, completa las actividades 12 y 13 de Cap. 18 para practicar los verbos con los cambios.

- Los verbos regulares del pretérito - We are going to start working with the regular preterite tense verbs this week. The preterite tense will be a big focus in Spanish II next year, but we are going to start becoming familiar with it this year. This week, we will only work with regular verbs that use these endings. There are a variety of spelling changes and also stem-changes that occur in regular preterite tense verbs, but we will learn about those later. Many of our most common verbs in Spanish are irregular in the preterite tense (ir, ser, dar, estar, hacer, tener are just a few of the irregulars in the preterite tense). For more specific information, check out the PowerPoint presentation and notes below (only focus on slides 1-10 of the PPT and pages 1-2 of the notes and we will come back to the rest later). In Voces Cap. 16, you can also find a brief tutorial with examples on the "el pretérito de los verbos regulares terminados en -ar" page under the menu for the chapter, or view the presentation of the same name under the "presentaciones" section of the menu. When addressing groups of 2 or more, use the Uds. form (this is what I use in class with all of you - Saquen la tarea. Repitan por favor. Levántense.). Review the PowerPoint presentation about how to form los mandatos formales, paying special attention to any irregularities in the "yo" form of the present tense of these verbs and the 5 verbs that are irregular in the command form.
- la "a" personal - Last week in Capítulo 13, we skipped over the practice of the "personal a" in Spanish. Spanish grammar requires the use of the word "a" following a verb if there is a person that comes after the verb. For example, "Veo a mi abuela." requires the use of the personal a because mi abuela is a person; however, "Veo el coche nuevo." does not require the personal a because a coche is not a person. Complete Cap. 13 actividad 8: la "a" personal by adding "a" if the noun following the verb is a person and leave it blank if the noun following the verb is not a person.

Bolivia is a unique country in South America. It is one of only 2 land-locked countries in S.A. and has 2 capital cities. It also has one of the most dangerous roads in the world that runs through the Andes mountains, causing some problems for those wishing to travel through that area. In the cities, there is a different type of traffic problem - cars not paying attention to pedestrians. Check out the videos to see how they are working to solve this problem and respond to the discussion prompts on this week's Schoology discussion board.
